Lempuyang temple is one of the nine big temples (Khayangan Jagat) in Bali which is called as Sad Khayangan temple. Sad means six and Khayangan means a place for worshipping God. In the book of Bali Culture and Agency (1998), the name of Lempuyang derives from two basic words. Those are “Lampu” which means light and “Hyang” which means God. So, Lempuyang is a holy God’s light which lights up brightly. Lempuyang temple is an old temple in Bali. It is located in Karangasem regency, the east part of Bali Island, exactly on mount of Lempuyang.
The way to reach the peak of Lempuyang temple which is named as Pura Lempuyang Luhur is attractive and challenging. We have to climb about 1.700 stairs up. One of interesting spot before going to the peak is the gate heaven of Lempuyang temple. It becomes part of Lempuyang temple named Pura Penataran Agung. It is located in slope of mount Lempuyang. Penataran Agung temple has very attractive view from the entrance gate. The visitors can see the beauty of mount Agung and its scenery from there. The peak of mount Agung lies in the middle of the gate which is called as Candi Bentar. From those reasons, the gate of Penataran Agung temple nowadays called as the Heaven Gate of Lempuyang Temple.
Many visitors, throughout the year come to Lempuyang temple to take pictures and enjoy the scenery along the tracks to the peak of Lempuyang temple. Besides a place for worshiping Gods, it becomes one of famous tourism object in Bali especially in east part of the Island
